Akhilesh Yadav Advocates ‘One Nation, One Election’ on a Trial Basis to Assess EC’s Competence

Drishti mail: In response to the Central government’s formation of a committee to examine the feasibility of implementing “one nation, one election,” Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav proposed that simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections be conducted on an experimental basis. He suggested this approach to assess the Election Commission’s capabilities and gauge the sentiments of the people who are “eager to remove BJP from power.”

In a Hindi-language post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Yadav stated that experiments are typically conducted before launching major projects. He recommended that, before implementing “One Nation-One Election,” the BJP government should attempt to hold Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha (Assembly) elections concurrently in Uttar Pradesh, which has the maximum number of Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha seats.

Yadav explained, “This approach would not only demonstrate the Election Commission’s competence and gauge public sentiment, but it would also help the BJP understand the extent of public discontent and their determination to remove the party from power.”

To explore the possibility of holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across the country, the Central government had recently announced the formation of a committee tasked with submitting a report to Parliament.

BSP chief Mayawati has not yet reacted to the Centre’s move. However, in a social media post on X, she hinted at the likelihood of early Lok Sabha elections and stated that her party had initiated preparations accordingly. In her Hindi-language post, she mentioned, “Considering the possibility of early Lok Sabha elections, a meeting of all Uttarakhand office-bearers was conducted after the one in UP, focusing on strengthening the party organization, expanding the party’s base in society, and candidate selection, among other things. This state-wise effort will continue.”

Earlier in the week, Mayawati had ruled out the possibility of her party joining either the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). She affirmed that her party would contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections independently, as well as the upcoming Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
