Congress Alleges Rashtrapati Bhawan Sent G20 Dinner Invite in the Name of “President of Bharat”

Drishti mail: Jairam Ramesh, a prominent leader of the Congress party, has raised concerns over an invitation sent by Rashtrapati Bhawan for a G20 dinner scheduled for September 9. The invitation, according to Ramesh, referred to the “President of Bharat” instead of the traditional “President of India.” This change in nomenclature has sparked a debate about the country’s identity.

Ramesh cited Article 1 of the Indian Constitution, which states that “Bharat, that is India, shall be a Union of States,” emphasizing that even this “Union of States” is now facing challenges. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to distort history and divide India, which is also known as Bharat, and asserted that their party’s objective is to promote harmony, amity, reconciliation, and trust. He coined the acronym BHARAT, standing for “Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation And Trust,” as the party’s goal.

Ramesh’s statement is closely related to the recently announced joint campaign by the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, which aims to unite the country under the slogan “Judega Bharat, Jiteega India” (India will unite and win).

It’s worth noting that India has held the presidency of the G20, an intergovernmental forum for the world’s 20 largest economies, since December. A series of meetings covering 32 sectors has been conducted, leading up to the final gathering of government and state leaders from G20 nations in New Delhi on September 9-10.

Ramesh’s comments follow remarks made by Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who suggested the use of “Bharat” instead of “India.” Bhagwat argued that the country has been known as “Bharat” for centuries, regardless of the language used.

Harnath Singh Yadav, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), disagreed with the use of “India” and considered it a colonial term imposed by the British. He argued that “Bharat” carries a sense of inspiration and devotion that “India” does not, as “India” was a derogatory term used by the British to describe those they considered uncouth, fools, and criminals.
